When Should a Child Brush Their Own Teeth?

When Should a Child Brush Their Own Teeth? Vancouver DentistChildren should be able to do a pretty good job of brushing their own teeth around age 6.

You will still want to check occasionally to make sure they are brushing properly and not getting too lazy.

Using a soft toothbrush that is the right size for their mouth, they need to be brushing all surfaces of the teeth, front, back and the top surface of the molars.

Electric toothbrushes can be a great investment at this age in terms of making brushing more fun and ensuring proper coverage.

Before Age 6: Adults Brush for Kids!

Before age 6, kids will need assistance with brushing.

Children under 3 years old will need parents to do the teeth or gum cleaning for them.

As always, flossing, flouride and regular dental check-ups are also important at every age.

The best type of dentistry is preventative, not restorative and those healthy habits will go a very long way to ensure good oral health and fewer dental cavities.
