How to Lower Your Dental Costs

Dental coverage is not as widespread as healthcare coverage in BC. People are often, and for good reason, cost conscious about dental treatments. This is obviously a bigger concern for people with no dental coverage and especially those with no coverage that have kids.

With all this in mind, we thought we’d put some ideas out there on how to manage dental costs and try to keep the costs down. Here’s a little list for you.

How to Lower Your Dental Costs

  1. Look in to purchasing your own dental insurance. It is possible to purchase dental insurance if you aren’t covered through work. Many people either don’t know this or don’t think of it! Here are some more details on this option, from a great article on Canadian Living: ‘Dental insurance is loosely divided into three categories: preventive, orthodontic and restorative. If you’re in good health, a standard health plan can be purchased with an option to get a dental upgrade that includes checkups, cleaning, fillings and even X-rays for less than $40 a month.’.
  2. Good preventative dental hygeine at home. Yep, a daily routine of brush, floss, flouride rinse really will work wonders to keep dental issues to a minimum.
  3. Shop around. The BC Dental Fee Guide is published every year but is just a guideline for dentists. Read more about the Fee Guide and how here at Kits Family Dental we do follow the BC Dental Fee Guide.
  4. Healthy diet. We all know this one is key for dental health. Keeping sugar consumption down and drinking lots of water. Eating calcium-rich foods and other nutrient dense foods. Enough said, I think this one is pretty clear. That being said, treats in moderation is a great goal to shoot for. Hello to an occasional slice of cake or chocolate – yum!
  5. Discuss your concerns with your dentist. They will be willing to work with you if possible to keep costs down. For example, if you need 3 fillings done it may be less expensive to have them done in one appointment instead of two or three.
  6. Consider a dental school for some treatments. If you’ve never received treatment from a dental college, maybe a less complicated dental treatment would be something you’d be comfortable with. Perhaps cleaning, teeth whitening, sealants or the like would be something to consider. If so, check out the Vancouver College of Dental Hygiene.
