Top 5 Tips for Oral Hygiene During Pregnancy

Top 5 Tips for Oral Hygiene During PregnancyThe pregnant women we see in our practice often have questions for us regarding  how to best take care of their oral hygiene during pregnancy. Specifically, if there is anything special they should be doing.

Some of the tips are cornerstones for good oral hygiene in general. They’re likely more important during pregnancy in that trying to prevent any health related issues during this time is a great plan. Most mom’s-to-be would prefer to avoid dental anesthetic during a pregnancy if possible and also any extra stress that may come from worrying about a dental procedure or anesthetic.

Tip number 5 might come as a bit of a surprise. Watch the video on YouTube, read the tips there too or read on…

  1. Floss – you need to floss on a daily basis! (pregnant or not!) This will keep the risk of gum disease down to a minimum (teeth brushing is not enough).
  2. Brush for at least two minutes – no matter how much of hurry you are in, follow proper brushing technique (and for the duration recommended).
  3. Antibacterial mouthwash – use it after each meal, to reduce the amount of bacteria in your mouth.
  4. Watch out for the things you eat – acidic foods can damage the enamel of the teeth, predisposing you to dental problems.
  5. Visit the dentist more often – pregnancy can lead to gingivitis, which can be successfully treated if found out early.
