Dental health care – good habits vs. bad habits.
Here are some habits you need to practice and the habits you need to break away from to have a healthy smile.
Good dental habits:
- Brush your teeth twice a day with gentle circular movements.
- Floss daily with the flossing product you find convenient.
- Drink the right beverages including water, milk and tea.
- Eat foods that benefit dental health such as fruit, vegetables, seafood, cheese and nuts.
- Regular dental check ups can prevent bigger problems.
Bad dental habits:
- Not brushing or irregular brushing can result in cavities and gum problems. Too much pressure can damage tooth enamel.
- Not flossing – results in bacterial growth and plaque formation.
- Eating sugary foods and starchy foods – candy, chocolate, potato chips.
- Drinking sugary beverages such as pop, sweetened sports drinks.
- Not attending regular dental check-ups. Small problems can easily grow larger if left alone.
Choose the right dental care products for good dental health
Toothbrush: Choose toothbrushes with soft bristles = effective cleaning and no damage. Electric toothbrushes are great for most people as they help clean better, when used properly. Electric toothbrushes are great for people with arthritis.
Toothpaste: Toothpaste with fluoride will reduce the risk of cavities. Personal preference of flavours and textures.
Floss: Flat, wide dental tape to clean the larger gaps; thin, narrow strips to clean the small gaps. Waxed for tight spaces.
Mouthwash: Soothing ingredients such as Aloe Vera can be good for sensitive teeth and gums. Flouride mouthwash can be a good choice. Anti-plaque, anti-tartar and anti-gingivitis can all be good choices too.
