Silver Diamine Fluoride Can Stop Cavities!

For young children it is useful it delay treatment to when they are older or even until the tooth naturally falls out on its own.

Silver Diamine Flouride Vancouver – finally!

We wanted to blog about an exciting new treatment we have in our office: Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF), a topical application known to slow down/arrest cavities.

About Silver Diamine Fluoride

Silver Diamine Floride (SDF) is a topical, non-invasive procedure. Dentists apply it to affected areas 2 times a year for at least 2 years. It has been shown in studies to potentially arrest/stop cavities up to 70%.

The main drawback is that it causes the affected tooth structure to turn black, therefore it is indicated for situations where you cannot do a filling due to age, or behavior. Also for health concerns for baby teeth or teeth that are not an aesthetic concern. For young children, it is sometimes advised to delay treatment to when they are older or even until the tooth naturally falls out on its own. Speak to your dentist about what is best.

The American Dental Association says that Silver Diamine Flouride is a useful treatment for small children, and it can also be used as management for root caries in elderly people.

The SDF (Silver Diamine Fluoride) treatment is $32.80 CAD and is covered by some dental plans. Check to see if your plan covers it!

Here is the consent form – Silver Diamine Fluoride in Vancouver – Consent Form. This form offers more info on the treatment.
