Wisdom Teeth Basics 101 – Wisdom Teeth Extraction Vancouver by Kits Family Dental

Wisdom Teeth Extraction Vancouver

In this post we will try to cover the most commonly asked questions that we get at our dental clinic regarding wisdom teeth extraction.

Many people wonder things like:

  • Will I get wisdom teeth?
  • How old are people when wisdom teeth come in?
  • Do my wisdom teeth need to be removed?
  • Where can I get my wisdom teeth extracted in Vancouver BC?

When Can Wisdom Teeth be Left Alone?

Some people will not need to get wisdom teeth removed. Sometimes, wisdom teeth do not grow in at all, preventing any problems in the first place. Other people who do get wisdom teeth in may have room in their mouths for these teeth when they do come in. When the teeth come in and there is room in the mouth, sometimes the wisdom teeth grow in fully and properly.

When do Wisdom Teeth Need to be Removed?

On the flip side, you can see where problems can arise. Crowding is a problem when there are wisdom teeth growing in and no space for them in the mouth. They can cause other teeth to start to move around in the mouth, crowding them out and even undo some previous orthodontic work. Sometimes the teeth grow in only partially, leaving a flap of gum over top. This space between the teeth and gum can get food or debris in it and lead to an infection. Other times the wisdom teeth can be growing in tilted sideways or may even be blocked from growing in by other teeth or bone.

If the wisdom teeth are not causing problems now but might in the future, many dentists believe it’s better to extract while you’re young. The bone will be less dense around the tooth and the roots will not be fully developed yet. Also, young people tend to heal faster and be more resilient than older folks.

Regular checkups, especially during the teen years and in your 20s can allow your dentist to watch for and monitor any wisdom teeth that might be coming in, and keep you informed on what, if any, action needs to be taken.

In some cases it is obvious that the wisdom teeth need to be pulled, such as pain, crowding, impacted (teeth not erupting through the gum), cysts, tumors or teeth coming in at odd and uncomfortable angles.

It is not always totally clear if wisdom teeth should be removed though. Depending on the emergence of the wisdom tooth as well as the health and position of it and the teeth around it, it may not be obvious if the tooth should be pulled.
