Here are the most common reasons why a patient needs a night guard:
- To protect teeth during habits such as clenching and grinding. Clenching is excessive vertical force and grinding is “grazing” destructive forces. Clenchers often do not have many signs of wear on their teeth while someone who grinds will often wear their teeth flat, or in an early stage show wear or flat spots on their teeth. Either of these habits can occur during daytime, nighttime, or both.
- To protect existing dental restorations, especially porcelain crowns and veneers on front teeth.
- To aid a patient with excessive tooth sensitivity to temperature or sweet at the gumline where they have recession. Some patients can have very sensitive teeth due to clenching and grinding and this is the reason they wear a night guard. Wearing a night guard help prevent further recession and reduces stress on the teeth, relieving these symptoms.
- For patients with TMJ a night guard can help relax the jaws and reduce symptoms of pain and muscle tension.
Process for getting a nightguard:
Appointment 1: Come in for impressions (30 min appointment). Then we will send the impressions to the lab.
Appointment 2: The patient will come back 1 week later for the night guard fitting (15 min appointment). Adjustments will be made accordingly.

How long will a nightguard last?
Patients can wear them to sleep every night. They typically last 2-5 years (on average, people who are less careful will need them replaced sooner).
