How to Prevent Cavities in Baby Teeth

Prevent cavities in baby teeth-Dr. Mak, Vancouver DentistPreventing cavities in baby teeth: this is a question we get asked a LOT here at Kits Family Dental. The days of drinking Tang Orange Drink and eating endless nickel candy from the corner store are ones that most parents want to leave in the past. Parents today are very interested in seeing their children maintain cavity-free teeth through childhood and beyond.

As such, we thought it would be great to refresh the tips from this post on Staying Cavity-Free After Halloween – Cavities in Children for its excellent tips that can be applicable year round for dental care for children.

Tips on how to prevent cavities in baby teeth:

  • Use a flouride mouthwash or flouride tablets after brushing to help clear out remaining cavity-forming bacteria and strengthen enamel!
  • Avoid snacking between meals, especially on sugary or chewy foods that can accelerate the forming of cavities.
  • Chewing vegetable fibre (e.g. celery) after meals can help – it stimulates saliva, cleansing the fissures and pits where cavities typically form.
  • If you have braces, water picks can be used to replace flossing, which is impossible with most braces.
  • Chewing sugar-free gum between meals, particularly gum sweetened by natural sweetener xylitol, can help prevent cavities by helping neutralize the pH balance in your mouth and suppressing bacteria growth.
  • Visit our office regularly to ensure the application of fluoride, which strengthens enamel and thereby prevents tooth decay.  If you’re prone to cavities, it’s also a good idea to have ongoing check-ups to catch cavities early while they’re still small before they become larger problems.

Happy summer! Enjoy lots of fresh water to hydrate AND to keep those teeth clean, healthy and cavity-free.
