Does Eating and Drinking Acidic Food Hurt My Teeth? How to keep your teeth healthy

Did you know your diet affects your teeth?

What you eat and drink has a huge effect on your overall health, and especially your oral health. You should incorporate a variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, calcium-rich foods, and lean protein into your meals. Ensure you also get enough vitamin C and minerals from your diet to keep your gums healthy and prevent inflammation.

A diet high in acidic or sugary foods or drinks can break down tooth enamel which causes tooth erosion.

Tooth erosion is permanent and you may start to notice it by feeling pain or sensitivity when consuming hot, cold or sweet drinks. Tooth erosion also shows up as yellowing teeth or cavities.

Unfortunately, once erosion has begun, you may need fillings, crowns, a root canal or even tooth removal. Veneers may also be an option to restore your smile.

If you enjoy drinking tea and coffee, fruit juices, red wine, soda, and other similar beverages, make it a habit to rinse your teeth after every cup. These drinks contain high acid and sugar content, so they can erode your teeth’s enamel and invite stains quickly.

We also recommend drinking as much water as possible throughout the day to flush your teeth and mouth.

As you age, you may also notice your teeth looking more yellowish as the enamel wears off. Thus, rinsing your teeth can help you avoid staining your teeth further and prevent possible damage

If you are suffering from tooth or mouth pain or you are unhappy with the colour of your teeth, contact our office in Kits office today to book an appointment.

Nuts are good for your teeth!

Did you know that nuts are great for your overall health? That includes your teeth! Nuts are full of important elements like calcium and phosphorus and many nutrients that are essential for healthy teeth and gums.

Almonds, brazil nuts and cashews help fight bacteria that lead to tooth decay, while peanuts and almonds are a source of calcium and vitamin D. Cashews are known to stimulate saliva which helps to build and maintain the health of hard and soft tissue in the mouth. Walnuts are a powerhouse of goodness with all the nutrients in them.

Nuts are a great alternative to other snacks as they are low in carbohydrates which means they are less likely to add to any risk of bacteria or other mouth troubles.

Like with all foods and drinks, we need to ensure we have good mouth hygiene so it is important to have regular dental check ups and cleaning.

Eating very hard things like nuts on sensitive teeth is not a good idea. If things hurt when you eat, book in for us to have a look. Cracked teeth can sometimes be prevented if we see them early enough.

Call us to book your appointment at our Kitsilano dental office today.

How to Choose a Kids Dentist Vancouver

Dr. Robin Mak – Kids Dentist Vancouver, BC – Kitsilano.

Benefits of Taking Your Child to a Kids Dentist

One of the biggest benefits of taking your child to a kid’s dentist is that they are practised and rehearsed in working with children. Also, this type of environment tends to attract staff members that are happy to work with children and can translate into a more friendly environment for your kids.

Kids dentists may have smaller sized dentist chairs, a good collection of kids’ movies and shows, and maybe even a treasure chest full of cool toys to choose from after the visit.

The dentist will be experienced in how much freezing and other medications to use in varying sizes of small children.

Considerations

Some of the same considerations as choosing a dentist for adults will come into play when choosing a kids dentist. A nice clean office space, modern and up to date dental practices, a dentist who is as gentle as possible, pleasant dentist and office staff, good availability for appointments and usually a good location with easy parking factors into the equation too.

How to Choose a Kids Dentist Vancouver

Often people use word of mouth to get referrals from friends and relatives in choosing their dentist. There are also Google and Yelp dentist reviews and other online sources for dentist reviews in Vancouver.

After everything has been taken into consideration, it often comes down to ‘gut-feel’. Do you feel comfortable with this dentist and do you trust them?  The same is true for a kids dentist. Your child may voice some opinions about his or her feelings about the staff at the office and that can be something that you take into the equation where appropriate.

Root Canals Kitsilano

Do you think you need a root canal in Kitsilano Vancouver?

Here are some Common root canal symptoms

  • Persistent tooth pain.
  • Sensitivity to heat and cold.
  • Tooth discolouration.
  • Swollen gums.
  • Pain when you eat or touch the tooth.
  • A chipped or cracked tooth.

What is a root canal

Root canal therapy is performed when the pulp which is composed of nerves and blood vessels in the tooth becomes infected or damaged. During root canal therapy, the pulp is removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed.

People fear root canals because they assume they are painful. However most people report that the procedure itself is no more painful than having a filling. The discomfort experienced in the period leading up to the root canal is more painful than the procedure itself.

How a root canal is performed

An x-ray of the tooth in question will be taken prior to the treatment in order to check the shape of the canals and determine if the bone or surrounding area is infected.

To begin the process of treating the tooth, your dentist will administer a local anesthetic to numb the particular area.

By using a rubber sheet also known as a “dam” to isolate the tooth, your dentist keeps the tooth and surrounding area clean and dry and free of saliva.

A hole is then drilled into the tooth to gain access to the pulp chamber.

Once your dentist has exposed the pulp chamber, they begin to remove infected pulp and, eventually, the nerve itself.

This process is accomplished through the use of root canal files. These files, which vary in diameter, are placed one at a time into the tooth and down the entire root canal.

This effectively cleans out any debris from the chamber and canal. Once this is done, your dentist will refill the canals and chamber with a rubber compound and seal it with cement.

What Happens after a Root Canal?

After a root canal is complete, the tooth will be able to function as it normally does. Although root canals remove the nerve inside the tooth, these nerves don’t serve much function in a fully-formed tooth.

Do I Need a Crown after a Root Canal?

Sometimes! Needing a crown on your tooth after a root canal depends on the location of the tooth in the mouth. Teeth towards the back of the mouth like molars and premolars are needed more for chewing, and generally require crowns, while incisors or canine teeth near the front don’t often need a crown.

Got more questions? The team at Kits Family Dental will be happy to answer any questions you have on root canals in Vancouver! Please call 604-738-1816.

Why Thumb Sucking Harmful for Kids Teeth – Advice from a Kids Dentist in Vancouver

Why kids suck things

Children suck their thumb, or other fingers to soothe, relax and often put themselves to sleep and sometimes During times of stress and anxiety. It’s a natural instinct and normal behaviour commonly in younger children, the same way that other children cuddle a toy or blanket.

Why is it bad….

There aren’t any serious conditions that come from thumb sucking and sucking fingers or a pacifier prior to teeth erupting usually doesn’t cause any issues, however if continued beyond the age of four or once permanent teeth erupt oral problems such as

Palate issues – at times a higher palate can develop due to excessive pressure of the tongue and finger

Speech problems – thumb sucking adversely affected the alignment of teeth and jaw development, which may lead to lisp and speech impediments. T’s & D’s are more challenging to pronounce and this may affect articulation when speaking and require speech therapy.

Misaligned bite – is the growth of the upper jaw, its natural shape is often modified growing narrow

Overjet – is the space between upper and lower front teeth in the front to back dimension. This occurs when excessive forward pressure of the finger while sucking.

How to prevent thumb sucking

It is important like anything with children it is approached kindly. Gently remind your child every time you see a thumb or finger in their mouth.

Give your child something to distract them, such as a favourite stuffed toy to hold or play with

Use a chart and/or rewards system. Some options are to mark the chart when they go a certain amount of time, an hour or two or a day, without putting their thumb in their mouth. If they are resistant to the idea of stopping, they could mark the chart when they stop sucking without complaining after being reminded.

Give your child plenty of encouragement and praise when they go a while without sucking their thumb or remember to stop without a reminder.

For older children, you could put a band-aid over the finger they usually suck on. This could be enough to help them remember their goal.

If the thumb sucking occurs during the night, it may be helpful to cover their hand with a sock.

If you are worried about your child, please book a consultation with us.

Periodontal Disease & Pregnancy: Risk to the Fetus

Here is the same info, in text for those who prefer it:

Pregnant women with periodontal disease are at 7 times higher risk for preterm birth and low baby birth weight than pregnant women who exhibit good oral health.

Nearly 40% of all women suffer from some form of periodontal (gum) disease during pregnancy.

Pregnancy tumors on gums: Pregnancy tumors are small, painless bumps on the gums that are red, purple or pink in color and often occur due to an inflammatory reaction to irritants in the mouth such as plaque and bacteria.

Pregnancy gingivitis: Fluctuation in hormones during pregnancy can lead to inflamed and sensitive gums when oral bacteria is present along the gum line, resulting in an increased risk for gingivitis.

Morning sickeness: Stomach acid can damage the surface of teeth and increase the risk for tooth decay. Pregnant women must use oral rinses safe for baby and mother to maintain tooth and gum health.

Avoid x-rays during pregnancy: X-rays can expose unborn babies to radiation, which can lead to adverse birth outcomes. Pregnant women must request that hygienists and dentists protect their abdomens with a lead apron prior to undergoing x-rays.

Increase calcium intake: Calcium is important for overall bone and tooth health. If mother’s body lacks calcium, baby will pull from the mother’s existing calcium supply, which can put mother’s oral health at risk.

How to Keep Your Teeth Strong & Healthy

Here are some excellent tips for maintaining strong, healthy teeth. We will jump right in:

Tooth Truth: Teeth have a protective outer layer called enamel. This layer is harder than bone and protects the teeth like a helmet.

What you should know: A crack in that armour leaves the tooth vulnerable to bigger losses.

Tooth truth: Many things can weaken enamel such as pop, cavities, tooth grinding or even certain medical conditions.

What you should know: Make sure your dentist knows about any conditions or habits so they can do things to help.

Tooth truth: The mouth can exert up to 200 lbs. of pressure every time you bite.

What you should know: Chew carefully and avoid biting hard, non-food items like pens and pencils.

Tooth truth: Cracked teeth don’t always hurt or become sensitive to pressure.

What you should know: Get regular hygiene checkups so you can catch issues before they become bigger problems.

Tooth Truth: Early intervention increases the chance of saving teeth.

What you should know: There are many things a dentist can do to reinforce your teeth. The longer you wait the less options you’ll have.
