Am I Too Old for Braces - Dental Myths

A Little More Info on the Above Topic:

Am I Too Old For Braces?

Many adults even into their 80’s are getting braces. There is a modern technology called Six Month Smiles that utilizes clear brackets and tooth colored wires so that aesthetically during the treatment the braces are much, much less noticeable than traditional metal colored braces. And the average treatment time is only 6 months!

Are My Headaches Caused by Stress?

We’ve all heard people talk about a ‘stress headache’, but is this a real thing? Many headaches are actually caused by teeth clenching, and the teeth clenching can be caused by an uneven bite. The good news is that an uneven bite can be fixed by the dentist.

Should I Brush When My Gums Bleed?

Some people believe that when brushing leads to bleeding gums that they should hold off brushing. Quite the contrary! Regular brushing and flossing is the way to help the gums to heal.

Do Cavities Hurt?

Surface level cavities won’t hurt at all. In fact, that’s the best time to catch them. Even large cavities may not hurt because the nerve may have been killed by the decay. You often can’t see the cavities visually with just the eye because they can be between teeth or even below the surface. So, assuming that your teeth are fine because they don’t hurt isn’t a good strategy. Regular dental cleanings and check-ups are the best plan.

Does Putting Aspirin on a Toothache Work?

This will not work, the aspirin can burn your gums. Don’t do this one!

Is Home Teeth Whitening as Good as Professional Teeth Whitening?

Teeth whitening guided by your dentist is highly recommended. This is because your dental work such as crowns and fillings won’t be affected by the bleaching. So as you can imagine, the end result can be less than ideal. See your dentist for suggestions on how to proceed.

Is it the Amount of Sugar That Causes Tooth Decay?

Well, sort of. Obviously if someone eats very little sugar compared to someone who eats sugar regularly, the first person can be much less prone to cavities. But there’s more to it. How OFTEN sugar is consumed is the more important factor than how MUCH sugar is consumed. Think of it like this, small snacks containing sugar eaten over the course of the day are much worse for your teeth than consuming one large, sugary dessert after dinner.
