What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a tooth colored and tooth shaped cover or cap that is cemented over an existing tooth. Crowns are used when the tooth has been damaged or in need of dental repair such as if you have a root canal, a broken tooth or a large filling.
How Many Visits Will it Take to Fit a Dental Crown?
Fitting a crown will require at least 2 visits to the dentist. On the first visit, the dentist will remove any decay and shape the tooth. An imprint will be taken for the lab to make the crown. At this visit, the tooth will be fitted with a temporary crown.
On the next visit, the dentist will remove the temporary dental crown and fit and adjust the final crown and cement it into place.
There are Several Types of Dental Crowns Available, Including:
- Stainless steel crowns which are usually used for children’s baby teeth, then it will fall out naturally when the child loses that tooth.
- Metal crowns, including gold alloy. Generally, less tooth structure needs to be removed when metal crowns are used and tooth wear on opposing teeth is minimalized.
- Porcelain crowns, aka Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns can be colour matched to your own teeth. Wear on opposing teeth is much more with this crown type though.
What is the Cost of a Dental Crown in Vancouver BC?
Crowns range from $1000 to $2000 each depending on lab fee (it can be different from case to case) and how complicated it is. Insurance usually covers crowns at 50%. Some policies won’t cover crowns/bridges/dentures at all – just cleanings and fillings.
How Long Will a Dental Crown Last?
Crowns are strong and last for approximately 10 years or longer depending on how well you care for them. Brush and floss just like your regular teeth. And don’t bite down on hard objects on your dental crown.
